Drawing with Durer (June 10-14)
Catching lady bugs with my younger class was one of the highlights of my summer, as well as seeing the older class paint their portraits. We focused on artist Albrecht Durer throughout the week. It was broken down into the following projects:
Rhino Drawing
After drawing rhinoceroses based off of the description given to Albrecht Durer, (with a few additions of my own) students drew their renditions what they thought I was describing. After I gave the clue about a horn being on the end of his nose, they pretty much figured it out. For images of student work click HERE. For more info on what I taught click HERE.
Insect Study
I read somewhere that if you lay a board in the dirt, the next day you will find bugs under it. It didnt work. Luckily, there were TONS of lady bugs perched on my daisies in the front yard that the kids loved carefully plucking them off of the flowers and bringing them into the classroom for closer study. We talked about bugs, observed them with a magnifying glass, drew them and then painted one in water color. For images of student work click HERE. For more info on what I taught click HERE.
Chalk Hand Drawing
Students learned how to draw hands, then we drew them using the reductive method using chalk pastel. For images of student work click HERE. For more info on what I taught click HERE.
Self Portraits
Painting with acrylics can be tricky, or so I thought before my students amazed me with their ability to use it. We discussed proportions of the human face, looked at photos of their faces then painted their faces onto canvas with acrylic. This took two class periods. For images of student work click HERE. Figure Drawing from last month
After making stick figure flip books I went over proportions of the body and proportions of the face with the class. After that the students spent two classes working on Grid self portraits after looking at the artwork of Chuck Close. The younger students finished their portraits in about 15 minutes so we spent the next class drawing the wooden figure with chalk. For more on the details on what I taught click here.
